The last of Hitler’s inner circle has died at age 94:

I don’t know who, that is credible, thought Hitler wasn’t involved in and deeply aware of the Holocaust, but apparently Darges biography, now published after his death, clears up any doubt.

By most accounts Darges seems a talented and brave man caught up with a really bad group. Had he been in America he might have been a Matthew Ridgeway or one of the other heroes that helped lead our victory.  But… he seems, like so many Germans of his era, to have been caught up in something crazy and unlike many Germans he remained unrepentant to the end:

"We all dreamed of a greater German empire," he said. "That is why I served him and would do it all again now," said the man who had a career after the war selling cars.
