Recall the letter:

“We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to assure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman.”

Very reasonable.  Similar but less strident to sermons and newsletters delivered in thousands of churches every week.

Hmmm let’s catalog today’s response…

Suspicious white powder sent to LDS temples

Thousands protest at Mormon temple in NY

Bill Quick calls Mormons bigots and urges gays buy guns

Calls for revocations of 501c status

BTW: Mr. Quick is confused. Mormons are very tolerant of alternative lifestyles that they believe are sinful and/or wrong for society.  What Mormons, rightly, do not want is being forced to support said aberrant lifestyles.  Some might say Mr. Quick is “bigoted” against people who adhere to age old proven standards of behavior.

I’ve been critical of Mormon church non-theocratic operations in some instances where I thought they were letting PR take over standards.  The handling of the Mountain Meadows Massacre being one example that they have recently done quite a bit to rectify.

In the case of gay marriage, I think the LDS church stands as an example to other churches of how to properly support their theological views in the public sphere.

It isn’t their stance that draws the ire of radical gays, it is their effectiveness.
