Wilmington, OH is about to lose 7,000 jobs when DHL cuts back its US operations:

Wilmington is home to a sprawling distribution hub, and more than 7,000 jobs will disappear, devastating the local economy.

The hub was built by converting an old US Air Force Base in 2005 with $400 million state and local money. The region now faces loss on that investment plus significant loss of tax revenue:

“We’re going to be taking 2009 needs and trying to fund them with 2005-level revenues,” said Randy Riley, the county commission president.

I wish Mr. Riley the best. I’d start with redefining “2009 needs” to ensure they don’t include “2010 wants”.

No news on how the cutbacks will affect DHL’s new “Bike” hub.

That area by I-71 is in the boondocks. A few Amish are around and eating out means Bob Evans, the world’s best biscuits! Folks will move out and west until they find work, not like the lazy people of Detroit.

Ken, I appreciate your best wishes. You are quite right. We can, and will only be able to fund the needs, not the wants of the county. Keep us and all who are being bashed about by a horrible economy in your prayers.

Randy…. good luck. I made a little light of it with the “bike” hub image, but you face serious issues. Sounds to me like the people of your county are in good hands.
