I found this very useful link on “10 Ways to Take Stunning Portraits” while prepping for a class I teach on Photography at my kid’s school. The tips are excellent. I certainly have used each of them over the years, although I learned them by evaluation of photos I liked and occasionally by inspiration.
Tip 9: Obscure part of subject to bring attention to other part

This year, after the class, I will supply the school with a good quality camera, and each day they will have a 4th through 6th grade child assigned to take pictures that they then up on the school website.
