Software engineers made the Top 9 list of professions that lost the most jobs in 2009:
The profession saw a 10 percent decline in jobs to 970,000 by the third quarter of this year, down from more than 1 million positions in 2008.
But take heart… in 8 years there will be 762K more jobs for software engineers. I’m not sure where though… India, China?

Your great flexibility in where you and the employees do their software work is a two-edged sword. You, too, could work in India, and when India’s labor costs inevitably rise, in Somalia. By then, you will need only a couple of systems engineers and a team of robots.

I doubt it will get that automated anytime soon, if ever.

The odd thing is that I have been hearing the opposite, that jobs are available for those willing and ready. My curiosity would be how many of those “lost jobs” were unfilled.

Willing, ready and talented should do fine. I do agree a lot of the “lost” jobs were at the margin of productivity.
