Just saw this on the wall at our local college:

Gosh… you conservatives probably can’t handle a crappy liberal remake of Madame Butterfly, so better stay home.

Us libertarians, even though we are impossible to offend, probably should stay home too.

    We libertarians ….

Since “conservative” means different things to different people, labeling people with it should have a specific meaning. Even conservatives disagree about who is one.

Libertarians also come in different flavors. Is a libertarian for or against abortion, progressive taxes, and liberating invasions?

  2. Ken Says:

I figured it was an elitist theater college professor writing it.

As to libertarian… against abortion, against progressive taxes, for invasions but prefer targeted assassinations.

libertarianism is about us, not what we do to other countries.

I know several professors and exec or two at the college who will be… displeased. Where, exactly was this?

Libertarianism is basically defined as more freedom less government.

To quote a recent article in Reason magazine by John Stossel: “[...] libertarian rules: private property, free markets, individualism.”

This was at the Performing Arts building, I forget the name of it. Where they hold plays.

I’m interested to hear your definition of a “crappy liberal remake of Madame Butterfly” and I’m surprised that Dixie can stage a musical that big. The story certainly contains mature themes like prostitution and sham marriage and abandonment of wife and child. Where is the “liberal” part that would annoy “conservatives”?

  6. Ken Says:

Dixie has a strong theater department and very nice facilities.

I was referring to Ms Saigon as basically the same story as Madame Butterfly but used as a vehicle to slam America re: the Vietnam War.

And I’m assuming the liberal poster of this warning is thinking that conservatives can’t handle prostitution and sham marriage in stories. Liberals are big stereotypers, but often accuse others of it.

I don’t know how well this play is doing here. Probably not very well.

Since none of the Dixie content goons were probably ever on Tu Do St or have any knowledge of the USAF hand down the hootch and the girl practice, the musical’s story is so uninteresting. The meaning of “butterfly” was even different in the RVN from the1890 Nagasaki tale of the Navy puke. See the show for the music and other talent if that’s your bag. The story is so complex (original rewritten five times) it doesn’t matter if someone’s offended but the goons may know they have bitten off a lousy chew and need cover for poor sales and local rag reviews. That beats trying to sing an octave higher!
