Martha Coakley, the Democratic candidate for Senate in MA, is a lawyer. That’s why I’d never vote for her. Now I know lawyers. More than a few. I have lawyers come over for dinner parties! But, as I’ll tell them to their face, I’ll NEVER vote for a lawyer to have power over me.
Why?
Because of the way they think. Lawyers spend 3 to 4 years after college learning to think precisely and learning to rationalize almost any act in the name of a higher good… “justice” – whatever that is.
So a lawyer, like Bill Clinton, can plainly lie, but sincerely believe he didn’t.
And a lawyer, like Martha Coakley, can deny innocents organs that would save their lives so that she can get a solid conviction on the guy who put him in the hospital.
Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley blocked the donation of Costin’s heart after he was diagnosed clinically brain-dead," writes Sean P Murphy of the Globe, "to preclude any possibility that his assailant’s lawyer might contend at the trial that Costin died of a pre-existing heart condition rather than the beating.
This is the kind of thinking lawyers find “natural” and “good”.
Sorry… I’ll have a lawyer over for dinner. And I’ll have them write up or review a contract for me. But I’m just going to have to take a pass at letting their kind of thought process anywhere near the unchecked power we have in government now. Well, it is checked, but only by lawyers – and you know how they can be.
