GM wants $10 billion of your money so they can merge with Chrysler.
Recall that GM wants Chrysler’s 11.7 billion in cash so they can get rid of those pesky Chrysler employees :

What do you think? How fast will the politicians grovel over GM so they can get back pennies on the dollar in campaign donations?
Alternatively, we could let those employees go after Chrysler fails for…. hey NOTHING. That’s right, the same lousy outcome could cost nothing.

That’s just disgusting. Maybe I’m a capitalist pig, but I’ve lived in countries where the government owned businesses and healthcare, and the standard of living was just atrocious. Who cares if some businesses fail, others will hire the people who got laid off, and do a better job of it. NO!
