Ask Russia about government run grocery stores
Because we have lots of spare cash, and because the government is SO good at all it does, this idea of spending $1 billion dollars to fund 2,100 grocery stores around the nation sure does make a lot of sense.
Or we could spend zero and get the hell out of Wal-Marts way.
Kirsten Gillibrand, expecting a tough re-election fight, thinks my money is the answer.

Central food planning is not a political winner. Cheese and food stamp handouts don’t work. Even the Army knows providing meal plans out of Chicago never kept the troops healthy unless they were in combat and needed 3500 calories a day. Lotsa greasey stuff!
Think those 2,100 country stores would water their meat, sell Coke, have ice cream all summer, and ship in tomatoes from Florida when the NY blight ruined the whole fresh crop? Tops, P&C, and small locals can barely compete in a few places. The problem isn’t the supply it’s the demand, viz. a lack of basic cooking skills at home.
