Brian, Jenny and I spent a nice evening woodworking out in my shop.

Jenny, age 9 (for 3 more days) is building a walking stick out of a piece of redwood. She learned how to measure out a multi-dimensional taper, cut it with the jigsaw, and then sand with the orbital sander. We then drilled a hole for the leather thong with the drill press. Endless sanding awaits.

Brian, age 11, is making a gift box. He learned how to make a cut list, check it twice, cut it with the compound sliding mitre saw (Dad supervised), glue it, clamp it and square it. These were butt joints. On scraps we practiced finger joints with the band saw. He will use that joint for his final box made from cherry.

I don’t use a table saw. They scare me. Lowes/Home Depot will rip wood for free. I let them do it. I use a circular saw and a t-square of melamine if I have to do it. For smaller cuts, I use the band saw instead of the table saw. If a project needs a table saw, I don’t build it.
