Take drug research for instance. Will drug research continue without a profit motive? Yes. But with politics driving the investment the results won’t be as encouraging.
Take Tesofensine for instance. Originally conceived as an Alzheimer’s treatment, it is proving surprisingly successful as a weight loss drug. Would politically driven researchers have pressed on in search of profitable uses for their R&D? Or would they be “Alzheimer’s researchers” and just move along to the next Alzheimer’s candidate?
Remind me, what Russian developed drugs benefit our lives?
I know trusting “profit” seekers sounds risky, but why would you trust power seekers instead? Government can do good things. For instance a government engineer made the M1 rifle. But in general, if the military isn’t involved, the political decision making process yields poor results. Take… hmmm… our banking sector for instance. Fine on its own. Terrible once politicians got their hands on it.
After an injury, my pituitary gland no longer works. I depend on daily and weekly injections to live a normal life. I would like research to continue for drugs that can improve my life. I’d like them cheaper, but more than that I’d like them INVENTED.
