Edith Shain, pictured above, has died at the age of 92.
I like the picture as a great picture, but it sort of bugged me at the same time. What’s with these pushy sailors going around kissing woman they didn’t know?? I didn’t like the idea of VJ day being like Halloween or a Lakers win – just an excuse to misbehave. I was pleased to read that she slapped the guy after.

Back home, kind of tired
We drove from Roswell, NM to St. George yesterday starting about noon. Got home about 1AM.
So I’ll get caught up and then resume blogging.
Our trip was fun. The shooting was tough (weather).
We had a nice side trip to the STI pistol factory in Georgetown, TX. I’ll post a link to Brian’s write up of that when he finishes it.
And we found lots of 1960 Ford Starliner parts cars. Including a surprising one in Roswell that will be brought to St. George in the next couple weeks.

I’m traveling to Texas to shoot a pistol match with my son. My father-in-law is along to help drive and also to find car parts.
Currently experiencing “progress” at the Hoover Dam. (-:

Not trusted and not that pretty. What’s with $14 mil a year?
Is Katie Couric worth $300K a week (or $14 million a year)?
No clue. But I’m pretty sure CBS knows if she is worth it. They have polls, q-ratings, viewer focus groups – they know what she is worth.
So I’m not going to bitch about what she makes. But I’d certainly ask her to recuse from reporting on other “over paid” executives. Or to note, during a report, that they could only dream of making what she makes.
Not that I’d ever see it. I don’t watch CBS news, or any other broadcast news. Ever.
My own, admittedly uninformed view, is that while anchors used to be “trusted”, now they aren’t. So any pretty blonde will do. Fox News has a bevy of them, make a $500K offer and I’m sure one of them would happily jump ship to read a teleprompter a few blocks over.

Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart appears to have died from strep throat.
"Our findings suggest that Mozart fell victim to an epidemic of strep throat infection that was contracted by many Viennese people in Mozart’s month of death, and that Mozart was one of several persons in that epidemic that developed a deadly kidney complication," researcher Richard Zegers, of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, told Reuters Health.
Strep hospitalizes a few thousand people a year in England. And it can kill if let go or if it mestatizes into nercotizing fasciitis or streptoccal toxic shock – these kill a few thousand people a year in the US.
Anyway, we are glad to have had Mozart for his 35 years.

If you publically opposed Hugo Chavez you paid a price:
Between late 2002 and August 2004, more than 4.7 million Venezuelans signed petitions in favor of a recall election for Chavez despite widespread threats that signers would be punished.
That petition was public and was distributed throughout the public sector (i.e. government). And lo and behold… opposition voters had 5% drop in earnings and a 1.5% drop in employment rates.
Vengeance had a cost for everybody in Venezuela… a 3% drop in G.D.P. attributable to the misallocation of workers due to “paying back” opposition voters.
Is Obama keeping a list?
Oh… I guess he is.

Gross!
Turns out, having a sister makes you happier and more optimistic:
Growing up with at least one girl in the family also makes people more able to cope with their problems, according to the study.
Alas, having a brother doesn’t have the same effect. But you do get to hear lots of booger jokes.

500 people attended the funeral of the idiot who murdered four policemen last week.
Singers sang. Poets read, and speakers remembered Mixon as an intense and animated storyteller, for his big smile, love of boxing and football and what they called a long and loving relationship with his wife of seven years.
It’s hard to know what to say about this. At a minimum it is odd. At the worst it means that a whole sub-class of America doesn’t really care if cops are murdered.

I will ask questions. I will ask questions.
Several hives of African Killer Bees were found in Southern Utah recently. Most in beehives kept by professional bee keepers.
Unasked by our uncurious reporters “how did they get here?”.
For instance, was the rampant illegal immigration from places where they live part of their migration route?
Ask questions dumb local reporters!

The pilot of Cactus 1529, the LGA controller, and the other pilots in the air at that time deserve a big hand for staying calm, professional and working the problem.

John Updike has died.
Over the years I’ve tried to read his stuff (The Rabbit books and Witches of Eastwick) but without success. I did finish The Coup, but out of duty, more than desire. I liked the idea of a John Updike, but in the end not his work.
Of his contemporaries, I read more James Michener and Leon Uris. Mailer, his biggest critic, is an awful writer and apparently a worse person.

He apologizes for calling Mormons un-American.
Excerpt:
"Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California’s Proposition 8 as ‘un-American,’" the actor said in a statement through his publicist. "I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination."
"But everyone has a right to vote their conscience; nothing could be more American," the statement continues. "To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to Proposition 8 are ‘un-American’ creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use ‘un- American’ lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have."
Uhm… thanks for the kind words, but first intentions count a lot. I’ll think twice about going to a movie you are in going forward Tom. My wife will still go, no doubt, but if it doesn’t thrill me interest, I’ll skip it.
Consumer’s choice is till an American thing (for now).

My son and I drove past this crash shortly after it happened last evening. Responders were there, but even in the dark it looked really bad:
Lt. Kyle Whitehead of the St. George Police Department said witnesses reported the dark blue Jeep was traveling south on 3050 East at a high rate of speed, swerving across three lanes of traffic, and smashing into a nearby building, tearing a hole in a concrete wall and uprooting a tree.
There was also, oddly, and unreported in the paper, one of those cluster of mailboxes you see in cul-de-sacs, bent and destroyed in the middle of the road. Not sure if he hit it and sent it flying from where it was supposed to be, or if he was swerving to avoid it because it fell out of a truck.

Happens all the time.
I think the most likely legitimate use of a concealed weapon for most people is to defend against attack by an animal.
Animal attacks are very common. On average 157 deaths from animal attacks happen every year. Dog bites send over 1000 people a day go to the ER.
I love my critters, even Fritz my wiener dog that hasn’t quite figured out house training… But not everybody controls or trains their animals.
When I go for walks I usually have had a stick. But I feel better about defending against a pack of feral dogs with a gun than a stick.
