An appropriate sit-in by people with real grievances

Laid off workers at Republic Window and Doors have staged a “sit in” after losing their jobs last week:

they won’t leave the plant until they are assured they’ll receive their severance and vacation pay.

Instead of sitting on their duffs causing trouble they should be out trying to find work, or… crazy as this may sound, working for half or 3/4 pay or in some other way trying to keep Republic Window and Doors making windows and doors.

I’d rather hear of workers “making history” by recognizing the economy sucks right now and work WITH the company rather than against it.

Naturally the usual suspects – Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama, are there to egg them on to failure of the company and their jobs.

Somehow… I think Barack and Jesse will be just fine after the sit-in fails.

Which duff to sit in, sailor’s pudding or Homer’s beer? The hyphen means a lot!

AP Story: Bank of America says it will extend credit to a Chicago window and door maker whose workers have occupied the factory for five days. The bank said Tuesday that it’s willing to give the Republic Windows and Doors factory “a limited amount of additional loans.” That’s so it can resolve claims of employees who have staged a sit-in since Friday. The factory closed Friday after Bank of America canceled its financing. Workers were given three days’ notice. But they refused to leave and vowed to stay there until receiving assurances they would receive severance and accrued vacation pay. The bank has been criticized for cutting off the plant’s credit after taking federal bailout money.

Bad move on BA’s part. Bad precedent and a waste of my bailout money. They aren’t their obligations. I don’t even think they are truly the company’s legal obligations.
