So here I am, a father with a son that is strongly considering military service 7 years from now. Let’s ignore that 7 years is a long time, he could decide to be a peace activist. Lets assume that in 7 years he comes and asks “hey Dad, should I join?”
You know that I’m becoming dubious of the patriotic reason for joining the military. It can be summed up as “Why risk life and limb for freedom when our leadership is busy removing freedom with corrupt voting & slave level taxes, all while they give much of the country to Mexico”. There are nuances of course, but that sums my views up pretty nicely.
Reasons remaining to join include an opportunity for adventure. Frequent access to machine guns. Free ammo. Oh yeah… an opportunity to excel. An opportunity to grow and lead. An opportunity to meet a nice boy….
Nope. No thanks. The military can be a social experiment, but I’d prefer it remain the one part of society exploring the benefits of morality, honor, hard work, introspection, and merit. Adding a narcissistic disease ridden population to the military just doesn’t fit the bill.
I don’t need my boy coming back from the Marines “changed” in any way other than honor, strength and self-discipline.
Homo-phobic? Whatever. I don’t like gay culture. So sue me. I don’t want my boy to be forced to be part of it – and that is exactly what would happen.
