Zero tolerance policies of school system bureaucrats put a 1st grader in reform school for a folding fork, knife and spoon combination:

A Delaware first-grader who wanted to eat lunch at school with his favorite camping utensil, a combination of folding fork, knife and spoon, now faces 45 days in the district’s alternative school for troublemakers.

Do not be surprised by the lunacy created when you run a system by and for bureaucrats.

The obvious thing is to not ban anything in particular, but to punish incorrect use.

I haven’t seen anything as drastic as that at the high school I work at, but I did see a senior who worked at a car dealer part time get 5 day suspension when a security officer found a pocketknife in the console of his car.The knife was for his job. I argued against it but rules are rules. I refused to cite him, but the school did their thing.
And before you ask, the rules also say any car on school property can be searched at any time. Its a condition of parking on the school property. He therefore gave consent to the search by parking in the school lot. If he didn’t want his car searched he could have parked on the street.
