California, in the middle of major deficits and revenue shrinking did what most prudent states and employers would do in such dire situations.
That’s right… they HIRED 3,600 new employees.
The article doesn’t mention the cost, but with an average salary of over $64K a year, that works out to over $2.3 billion + the long term pension and healthcare costs!
They never surprise, California, their compass always points in one direction – the WRONG way.

I did think it was odd that Carmen would tell me that poeple were getting layoff notices at CDCR, and then tell me they had hired new people. I’m also sure they had to pay a lot to process these new hires while they were busy laying off people already employed by the state.
