Start Weight:      201.00 lbs
Current Weight:  191.00 lbs

Darn I went up a pound. Not sure why, I ate exactly right yesterday.  Perhaps it is water weight, or perhaps I added a pound of muscle. We will see.  An accurate body fat measuring system would be useful.

Binge Day

The diet calls for a binge day where you eat anything and cause a calorie and glycemic spike. The author says its important. So I’m doing it.  This is breakfast:

and a glass of milk.  This isn’t something uncommon in my recent past. I’ve often eaten donuts and milk for breakfast. It is just that for the first 44 years, I rarely gained weight.

We will see.  I ate 3 of them, and had to choke them down. And I’m writing this an 1.5 hours later and I am tired and getting hungry.

I did walk the dogs though:

I LOVED binge day. I guess I’m one of those psychologically “weak” individuals who need it. I loved my doughnuts, pizza, potato chips, ice cream, more ice cream, unlimited diet pepsi. Each one an exciting experience. I don’t feel crappy either. In fact, I slept really great last night!!!

Hello, I have a question. You say that the body-fat measuring device gave you seemingly random results. Was this a handheld device and, if so, were you measuring first thing in the morning? My understanding with these things is you should wait until, say, late afternoon or evening to test your body fat with these devices. From what I’ve read, one is dehydrated when one first wakes up (this is certainly true for me), so it’s better to test body fat with the impedence devices later in the day after one has gotten adequately hydrated.

    Any thoughts?

I use the Omron handheld device. I’d avoided the early morning dehydrated state, and instead did it at 10AM for a few days. Very up and down results. I’m going to take it home and try it at night to see if it stabalizes.

But I’m also going to get a DEXA scan for body fat, here in the very near future, once I get past all the holiday makeup work stuff. Tim recommends this in the book, and I can see why.

I’m on my first binge day, and man is it hard. My first week was great, I actually got to the point where I liked what I was eating. I did have a few cravings during the week, so I wrote them down and indulged all of them today.

My theory as to why the binge day is important, and works, is that you are effectively taking advantage of your body’s feast and famine response. I don’t know about you, but during the week, I’m only consuming 800-1200 calories a day. Sounds like famine to me. Today, I have little doubt I’ll top out at over 6,000 calories. Definitely feast. Too many days of famine and your metabolism crawls and you don’t lose weight. By binging, we’re letting our bodies know that there’s no famine, and it can use of all the fat stores it wants to. And, when I dieted in the past, I was always confused that when I plateaued, pigged out, and started losing weight again. I’m lovin’ it.

Here’s what I’ve eaten so far today, and I still have one meal to go…a burger maybe, or pizza. Right now I feel pretty gross…but I’ll take one for the team.

    - 2 Artisan Egg Sandwiches (Sausage) from Wendy’s (480 calories each!)
    - 6 chocolate chip cookies (90 calories each)
    - 1 pint Ben and Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie (1040 calories!)
    - 1 Volcano Nachos from Taco Bell (980 calories)
    - 2 Beef Mexi Melts from Taco Bell (280 calories each)
    - 1 Large Mt. Dew from Taco Bell (300 calories)

4380 calories so far. Good God…hope I have plenty of toilet paper.

Good luck Joe. Or… should I wish your plumbing good luck instead (-:

I’m on my 2nd binge day. Less crazy than the first, but it is hard to eat this stuff.

I suspect your theory about fooling the body that everything is fine is close to the mark.

I’ve just finished my first week on the plan and had lost 3.5kgs in the first 6 days. It was great! Then I had my binge day where although I didn’t eat too badly, I did have a night out with too many drinks. Then this morning (two days after binge day) my weight is almost back to starting point. I have measured myself and have lost 16cms total which is great. But the scales have disheartened me a bit. Thoughts?

I love reading what you guys are eating on your binges. I’m excited and scared about it. I’ve been doing so well eating right, it frightens me to put all that junk back in. I have my first one tomorrow so we’ll see how it goes. Dont get me wrong im pumped to have some sweets!
I did want to give you guys a friendly reminder that our first meal of the binge shouldn’t be junk food. And remember to have the fruit juice and coffee with the second meal and add your cinnamon. Good luck everyone, reading updates keeps me motivated so thank you for this blog!

  8. Ken Says:

    Sherry… Hope it goes well.

I’ve finished mine for the week today and I feel pretty icky.

I sort of messed up your advice on fruit juice and what not. Most Saturday’s I have a long gap between breakfast and when I eat next. Ate at 7AM this morning, lunch at 3:45.

  9. Joe Says:

I think I need to go back and reread the binge day advice from the book. In all the excitement, I must have missed the advice about no junk food for the first meal and the fruit juice and coffee thing. Then again, I now consider everything I used to eat junk food. :-)

I may have changed my theory about the reason for binge day. After my 2nd, and how gross it made me feel, I think Tim’s playing another psychological game with us. We eat the crap we used to love and it makes us feel horrible, and, for me anyway, it no longer tastes good. I’d say those two factors make it much less likely that I’ll fall back to my evil ways. Especially the way that food makes me feel. The icing on the cake for me…up 6 lbs this morning! I know it’s because of all the sodium in the food I ate yesterday, but man is that a slap in the face. Today I drink lots and lots of water and eat lots and lots of leafy veggies.

  10. Teri Says:

I, too, am trying this diet for the first time and TODAY is my first binge day and I’m just NOT feeling hungry for all that crap! I bought a 6 pack of Snickers and just can’t get excited about them. I ate two tiny chocolate covered donuts mid-morning and it was just o.k. I thought I’d have an ecstatic experience, but no.
I DID remember to eat a “regular” diet breakfast so that filled me up with 3 eggs and 2 turkey sausage and black beans and green beans, so maybe that’s it. Tonight, I plan fried chicken and french fries at this joint that’s the best for junk food like this. Hope I can handle it. DON’T FORGET THE LITTLE SQUATS AND SUCH BEFORE AND AFTER BINGING! Don’t know what they’re for, but I’m following this thing to the letter. BTW, are we supposed to binge DURING our regular scheduled meals or ANYTIME during the day??? He never brought that up. Later…

  11. Ken Says:

Teri…. Tim did leave a few holes in the binge knowledge.

Binging makes me feel bad. So when I’m back off this trip, I’m going to modify it. I’ll eat sort of bad, like maybe some french fries, but nothing too pure sugary.

Sort of a mini-binge. I hope it does the spike he says the body needs, without the associated ick.

  12. Teri Says:

me too. I’m not totally pigging out today. I just had a croissant with a Hershey bar in the middle (warmed up so it melted a little). It was DELICIOUS, but now I have a little headache, and I NEVER get a headache. Also, I did drink 1/2 glass of OJ before I ate it and also did the squats and pushups before and after. I’m wondering if we should only binge AT MEALS and not in-between…I googled this but no answer yet. I plan to not binge except at lunch and maybe (like you with some fries) and then at dinner with the fried chicken I planned and maybe a “flurry” after that. I also thought about popcorn with movie night tonight…just a thought, but I’m NOT going to eat ’til I make myself sick…thanks for the feedback!

  13. Ken Says:

croissant hershey bar… mmm.. that sounds good.

Tim left too much out on the binge, and should firm it up online. If anybody knows him… pass that along.

On popcorn…. it isn’t too bad actually, on a glycemic level. You can eat a lot before spiking. A whole tub, not good. But I’m not going to worry much about sharing a bit with whoever I go with.

  14. Annie Says:

Tomorrow is my first binge day and I am really scared! I have lost 5 lbs. and am terrified of regaining it all in one day. Planning on having a Valentine’s Dinner with my kids and eating some Cold Stone ice cream. I don’t think I was clear on the supplements for binge day — can anyone help?
