In Virginia, the answer is pretty much "Yes," with a few caveats.

We don’t license you before your dopey column is printed. Being silly and writing about it is your right. Nor do we license your choice of faith. It is your right.
A basic human right exists to defend yourself, and we are franchised to a right to keep and bear arms in our Constitution. If you don’t want to use that right, fine. But leave it alone for me.
