My political beliefs were first formed in the late 70’s. At the nadir of conservatism, I saw something in it that made sense. A few years later… Reagan.
Jay Tea covers similarities between 1976 and now:
Economy a bit on the shaky side: Check
Very unpopular Republican president blamed for the loss of his (would-be) successor: Check
Trouble with Iran brewing: Check
Energy crisis: Check
Smiling, cheerful national newcomer Democrat elected as president:<Check
Career Washington insider elected as vice-president: Check
Russians/Soviets feeling belligerent and expansionistic: Check
He then says “we are so screwed”. And maybe we are.
But 4 years after 1976 came Reagan.
But Reagan depended on a fair election. We may not get the benefit of free and fair elections.
Republicans and Libertarians, and those remaining Democrats not caught up in haze of socialism, need to focus on keeping elections fair. Obama and his ilk will try to let illegals vote. They will try and let felons vote. They will try and let their law breaking supporters vote and donate many times.
If we let them we will be doomed to a Soviet life. Or have to take up arms to avoid it.
